I woke up Monday morning with a headache and the boys were running around at 100% energy by 7:00 AM. It was one of those mornings where my patience was low and my need for some "me-time" was at an all-time high so I did something I rarely do. I looked at Nick and said, "I need the day off." The initial look on his face was priceless, but he knew I was serious pretty quickly. I love my family and I love being at home with them but I also am at a point in my journey of motherhood where I know when I need a break for everyone's sanity.
My best friend, who is also expecting a boy, had the day off as well so I knew it was a perfect day to catch up with her and also get some boy-free time. We started the morning off with a refreshing walk which led us huffing and puffing for air thanks to our little bundles in tow. After that, we enjoyed lunch and just caught up on life. Knowing that Nick was at home with the boys and that I didn't have to worry about a sitter (needing to rush home) gave me the ability to be fully present in our conversation and it was so good for my soul.
After lunch, I took the rest of my day to run errands and enjoy doing and listening to things I cannot do on a normal day. I went to Hobby Lobby for the FIRST TIME EVER! Wow, so thankful I didn't have the kids with me because I was in heaven and literally went down every aisle. The car needed to be washed so I ran through the drive-thru quickly (Nick washed my car too, so it was a win-win) and then I headed to Nektar to get a detox juice. It was so amazing to drink a beverage without sharing it and getting to listen to any radio station I wanted without having to listen to my two back seat drivers.
Nick's birthday is in two weeks so my last stop was at Nordstrom Rack where I got him an array of clothes to choose from. Surprisingly, everything fits him which was awesome because he was in need of a few staple items. Wife points!
By 2:30 PM I was ready to see my boys again and we finished the day off with a family walk and homemade mac and cheese topped with bacon. I am so glad that when I communicate to Nick that I need help or in this case a day off, he is willing to step in and help me. There is no way I would give up my life, the good and the bad, but it is days off like today that gives me the energy and boost I need to tackle the busyness of this season.
I encourage you to communicate your needs if you haven't in a while. If you are in need of some "me-time," ask for help. Whether that's from your spouse, family, or a friend; just ask. Three years ago I would have worried too much about things not going my way while I was gone. Now I know that my husband is and has been capable of handling things and that he is also glad to help me.
Cheers to you getting a mommy day off if you need it, in hopes of it rejuvenating you for your greatest calling ... a mom.
